🙈 25. Props Analysis 🙈

Originally, our assigned blog post said that we had to create a "Supporting Character Analysis", but we obviously don't have any other characters in our film, so we're just doing props instead!

As I've probably said hundreds of times by now, our character in "Chasing Perfection" is this super messy and disorganized girl who has her life in a jumble and is struggling with feeling burnt out. Now obviously our character has to portray it in some way, so our props clearly reflect that in pretty much every shot that's used in the film. The image used above is a perfect example of this -- a train wreck of clutter and chaos that seems to spread everywhere she goes.

And this is obviously going to be some serious gender typing in this sort of scenario, since our character is obviously a female. So in the bathroom scene, we felt that it would be pretty accurate to leave her makeup splattered every and leave her medication, deodorant, brushes, towels, and makeup removers thrown around. While our character doesn't use any makeup in the film, I feel like it just adds more character and accuracy to the scene, especially since she's in a rush to get to school on time.

In her bedroom, we also see these sort of elements of clutter and disarray scattered throughout her room. While the lighting seems extremely dim and you can't see much, there are some items that are slightly visible. For example, upon close inspection, you might be able to see the bag of Cheetos sitting behind her head, the row of candles on the top of her shelf/desk thingy, a tall Starbucks cup, a McDonalds bag sitting by her body on the bed, and her clothes and underwear spilling out of her white drawer on the right side of the screen. I'm not gonna lie, it was pretty fun trashing the bedroom and placing the props carefully to ensure it wouldn't look too staged. I also look like a dead corpse in that picture so I guess that's also fun :D

Rebecca and I still have a few more things to film, but I'm sure we'll follow along with the whole theme of being messy and disorganized (for example, if we film in a car, I'll probably make sure that the windows of the car are dirty and dusty and that she has a messy dashboard etc).

Our set has been thought out quite meticulously, since we've analyzed what environments would be best to film in and would fit our character's psychology and state of mind. I don't know if I've talked about this before, but Rebecca and I have been filming at each other's house, since her room is more practical, bigger, and has wayyyyy better mood lighting compared to mine (and she has a huge sliding mirror that we made use of in the film). However, for the bathroom scene we figured it would be easier to film in my bathroom since I have a smaller sink and mirror with a more modern touch, compared to Rebecca's super long bathroom sink and large mirrors. So yeah! Everything has been going quite well and I often stay up (when I'm suffering from my lovely insomnia) and think about new ideas for our project and then share it all with Rebecca and I can't lie, it's pretty nice.
