🌟 30. Use of Lighting 🌟

Rebecca and I recently went to a concert in Miami and the lighting was pretty cool and reminded me of our film opener, so I just had to use this photo πŸ˜ƒ. I'm pretty surprised I didn't end up losing my voice despite screaming my lungs out, but I guess that's a good thing!

Anyways! Our lighting for our project consists of a lot of blue, purple, and pinkish hues, and as mentioned in my "Color Use" blog post, the slightly blue colors could represent her sadness and negativity that she's surrounded by, while the pinkish hues are an attempt to induce her calmness, despite all the disorder she experiences on a daily basis. The lighting in this film was something that I really wanted to focus on, and I believe that it's one of the key factors that makes this project slightly unique compared to past projects that we've seen. Making use of the lighting was pretty convenient, since Rebecca has some colorful Christmas lights hanging around her room, but we used some pretty interesting techniques to bring in some more light. We switched between using my phone, my laptop, and my Apple Watch as sources of light. I simply just searched an image of this galaxy color way and adjusted the brightness for the specific scene, and depending on what color we wanted, we would zoom into the different shades of purple, pink, and blue.

Holding the funny "lighting equipment" was quite a task and required some trial and error to captivate the exact type of lighting we wanted, but it was pretty fun to experiment how the colors would highlight certain features and aspects! If I remember correctly, sometimes the lighting in the post-production would come out a little wonky, so Rebecca would have to edit the videos from her camera roll and adjust the saturation to keep the lighting consistent with each other, rather than having the harsh color change (if that makes sense). We attempted to use some golden or white lighting from Rebecca's makeup mirror, but it just didn't give off the sort of effect we wanted. Oh, and I forgot to mention what we used the Apple Watch for! Basically, for the alarm clock opening shot, we had a red light cast upon the time, and this was used to sort of symbolize the dreadful experience of waking up in the morning and just being annoyed with the world and having to get on with your day.

Later on in our film (when we begin the rest of shooting over Spring Break) we might include some more artificial lighting to portray the blandness in her life and how everything just sort of blends in together in a sense. In the bathroom scene, we decided to use a slightly harsher sort of lighting - a bright white, rather than a golden-ish light - to fit the "vibe" better and take the audience through the dreadful routine while she's constantly rushing and getting ready.
