💒 37. What if We Had the Chance to Change Our Idea? 💒

The Grand Budapest Hotel Suite - YouTube

Both Rebecca and I are big fans of Wes Anderson's unique narrative and directing style (we're super exciting to see his upcoming movie "Asteroid City"), and during our last day of filming we began talking about the idea of creating a Wes Anderson-style film if we had the chance to redo our project. There is something so incredibly captivating about his films that easily drags in his audience, especially since there haven't been many other directors that incorporate quirky elements into their films.

We've watched a few videos on how Wes Anderson incorporates his iconic elements into his movies, such as the use of symmetry, his attention to detail with camera shots, and the use of color pallets. However, if we were to create a film with the unique directing style of his, which is dubbed as "formalism", we certainly wouldn't be able to keep the same plot that we envisioned for our film opener. His films are usually geared towards comedies and dramas, while our film is more on the melancholic side. Another thing to note is his use of filters, while our films had absolutely no filters, and instead we just edited the shots to help the colors blend seamlessly with one another. Another thing to note would be the animation or high-budget production he utilizes, for example, with the photo of "The Grand Budapest Hotel".

As a thought or idea, it seems as though creating a Wes Anderson-style film is a lot easier said than done. When I actually start to think more in depth about it, there are several complex factors that limit two Junior high school students from reaching his level of filmmaking. We obviously don't have the proper equipment for filming, and instead for our film opener we basically just relied on being still the entire time rather than getting a tripod stand. But I feel like capturing the dolly-in shots would be the most difficult part, which he often uses in his films. Obviously, with all the money he has to create spectacular movies, he can afford captivating set pieces and costuming that will bring the whole film together. However, with the limited time frame we're given to work on the project, as well as a lack of extensive experience in filmmaking and editing, it would be quite difficult to create a film inspired by his directing style.

But I truly feel as though Rebecca and I went down the right path when choosing our film's topic, especially with the limited locations and settings available to us. Perhaps for Rebecca's future film projects she'll have more luck and experience to create a Wes Anderson-style film, but I know that if I attempted to do it myself I would probably end up scrapping my entire film out of frustration.
